  15. <p>     DIED. SRI CHANDRASEKHARENDRA SARASWATI SWAMIGAL, 99, one of
  16. five major leaders of Hinduism; in Kanchipuram, India. The son
  17. of a poor Brahman schoolteacher, Saraswati displayed such promise
  18. that he was chosen by a religious predecessor to be a spiritual
  19. leader when he was 13. He devoted the rest of his life to learning
  20. religious texts and nearly a dozen languages, becoming the greatest
  21. living scholar of his faith. The swamigal, who journeyed throughout
  22. India by foot over two decades, was a committed believer in
  23. religious tolerance, a tenet he preached in spite of the recent
  24. rise of an often violent form of Hindu chauvinism. For that
  25. he earned the respect of India's Muslim minority.
